Yellowstone Avenue Concrete Replacement Starts July 6; Work Spans Chubbuck and Pocatello Through 2027

The Idaho Transportation Department will begin a major concrete replacement project on Yellowstone Avenue (U.S. Highway 91) starting July 6, affecting both Chubbuck and Pocatello through 2027.

Initial construction will focus on the section between Highway Avenue and West Burnside Avenue in Chubbuck, with additional work planned from Hurley Drive to south of Flandro Drive in Pocatello. The work is designed to address pavement deterioration caused by decades of heavy traffic on the corridor.

What to Expect During Construction

Drivers should prepare for single-lane closures on Yellowstone Avenue during both daytime and nighttime construction hours. Access to driveways and side streets will be restricted for several hours during paving operations, so residents and businesses in affected areas should plan accordingly.

An ITD spokesperson noted that “several areas of Yellowstone Avenue have deteriorated after years of heavy use, and the new concrete is expected to serve the community for 20 years.” The replacement concrete is designed to extend the roadway’s functional lifespan two decades into the future.

Bus stops along the construction zone may be temporarily relocated during active work phases. Commuters relying on public transit should confirm current stop locations with their service provider.

Coordinated Work in Chubbuck

The City of Chubbuck will conduct water main replacement work on the west side of Yellowstone Avenue between Circle Inn Street and Mingo Lane during daytime hours, coordinating with the ITD’s concrete replacement effort.

Residents with questions about the Chubbuck water main work can contact Chubbuck Public Works at (208) 237-2430.

The Yellowstone Avenue corridor carries significant traffic volume as a primary north-south route through the Pocatello-Chubbuck area. The project aligns with ongoing summer maintenance efforts across county road systems, though the Yellowstone Avenue work represents a more substantial capital improvement rather than routine seasonal upkeep.

The project comes amid broader discussion about transportation funding challenges in Idaho, where road work projects have faced budget pressures in recent years.

What Comes Next

Motorists should monitor local traffic updates as work begins in early July. The project is expected to continue through 2027, meaning residents and commuters should prepare for extended lane restrictions and access limitations in both Chubbuck and Pocatello. Property owners and businesses along the affected sections are encouraged to reach out to city officials with specific concerns about access or operations during construction phases.
