Pocatello Fire Department personnel extinguished a brush fire Monday afternoon along Highway 30 in north Pocatello, containing the blaze before it threatened nearby structures or closed the roadway.
The fire was reported around 4:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of Highway 30. Metal grinding work being performed outdoors generated sparks that ignited nearby weeds and spread to some discarded tires in the area. A caller alerted 911 to the developing fire.
Firefighters arrived and brought the flames under control in approximately 5 to 10 minutes. The fire scorched roughly a 100-foot by 100-foot area of brush before being fully extinguished. No injuries were reported, and no structures sustained damage.
Crews remained on the scene for approximately 90 minutes to ensure complete suppression and monitor for any rekindling. The ambient temperature that afternoon had reached 100 degrees, creating dry conditions favorable to rapid fire spread—a factor that made the swift initial response critical to preventing escalation.
Highway 30 remained open throughout the incident, with no traffic disruptions reported. The fire was quickly contained to the brush area without affecting vehicle flow along the corridor.
The incident underscores the importance of fire safety precautions during hot weather, particularly when conducting outdoor work that generates sparks or heat near dry vegetation.
