The alert remains in effect from noon MDT until 9 PM MDT. Meteorologists attribute the hazardous conditions to a strong low-pressure system moving through the region, which is expected to produce scattered thunderstorms with minimal rainfall. While precipitation amounts will be low, the instability creates a significant ignition risk.
Outflow wind gusts are forecast to reach speeds of up to 50 mph. These winds, combined with dry conditions and lightning activity, mean that any fire starting during this window is likely to ignite rapidly and spread quickly across vegetation.
The warning replaces a previous Fire Weather Watch, which has been lifted. The alert covers several specific fire weather zones in Idaho, including the Northern Boise National Forest, the Southern Boise and Western Sawtooth National Forests, and the Camas Prairie area. Portions of eastern Oregon are also under similar advisories.
Officials advise residents to avoid outdoor burning activities during the warning period. The combination of gusty winds and lightning presents a distinct threat to property and natural resources in Bannock County and surrounding regions of Southeast Idaho.
