The National Weather Service in Pocatello issued a Special Weather Statement early Thursday morning to alert residents of severe conditions moving through southeastern Idaho.
Doppler radar detected a strong thunderstorm at 12:08 a.m. MDT, located approximately 11 miles northeast of Juniper and 24 miles north of Snowville. The system was traveling northeast at 30 mph, bringing dangerous wind gusts that exceeded 45 mph.
According to the weather service, these gusty winds pose a risk to property by knocking down tree limbs and displacing unsecured outdoor objects. Residents in the path of the storm were advised to secure loose items and stay away from windows.
The alert covered several communities including Rockland, Fort Hall Bannock Peak, Holbrook, Arbon, Daniels Reservoir, and Roy. The warning area extended across the Eastern Magic Valley, Raft River Region, Marsh and Arbon Highlands, and the Franklin/Eastern Oneida Region.
Lightning safety was a primary concern with the system. The NWS noted frequent cloud-to-ground lightning strikes accompanying the storm. Officials reminded the public that lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from the main thunderstorm clouds, meaning danger persists even if rain is not falling locally.
The strong thunderstorm impacted western Oneida and southeastern Power counties until approximately 1:00 a.m. MDT. As the system moved northeast, conditions were expected to improve for areas further east.
Severe weather remains a seasonal hazard in the region. Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and maintain emergency preparedness plans during storm season.
