Idaho Transportation Shifts Southbound I-15 Traffic Near Chubbuck This Weekend

Interstate highway

The Idaho Transportation Department will execute a major traffic shift on southbound Interstate 15 near Chubbuck this weekend as part of the ongoing I-15 expansion project between Pocatello and Fort Hall.

Beginning Sunday evening, southbound I-15 traffic will be redirected into newly constructed lanes north of 2 ½ Mile Road Bridge, extending to the Chubbuck Road Bridge. The shift marks a significant milestone in the $200 million project, which began in 2025 and is scheduled for completion in 2027.

Weekend Lane and Ramp Closures

Drivers should expect intermittent nighttime lane closures on I-15 in both directions from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday nights. During those hours, the speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 55 miles per hour.

The Northgate Interchange at Exit 73 will see its southbound ramps closed entirely from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday. Southbound traffic exiting at Northgate will be directed to the Chubbuck Interchange at Exit 61, approximately 12 miles south. Drivers seeking to enter I-15 southbound will have two options: the Chubbuck Interchange (Exit 61) or Pocatello Creek Road Interchange (Exit 71).

Two lanes will remain open in each direction during daytime hours, allowing traffic to flow while construction continues.

Project Overview and Timeline

The I-15 expansion initiative represents one of Southeast Idaho’s largest infrastructure investments. When complete, the project will expand the interstate to three lanes in each direction across the entire construction zone, addressing capacity needs for regional traffic and commercial transportation.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and plan accordingly during weekend travel. The Idaho Transportation Department recommends checking current traffic conditions before heading to the area and remaining alert for construction activity.

Detailed information on the project and updates on future construction activities are available through the Idaho Transportation Department’s official channels. Drivers with questions about specific closures or detours can contact the department directly.

What Comes Next

Additional traffic shifts and lane work are expected as the project progresses toward its 2027 completion date. The Idaho Transportation Department will provide advance notice of future closures and construction milestones. Motorists traveling I-15 in the Pocatello-Chubbuck corridor should remain flexible in their schedules and monitor news updates as the expansion work continues.
