Summer baseball is in full swing across eastern Idaho, with both the Gate City Grays and the Idaho Falls Chukars turning in strong performances during the week of June 22.
The Grays snapped a three-game losing streak in dramatic fashion, sweeping a doubleheader at Pocatello’s Halliwell Park on Friday. The twin-bill victory marked a much-needed turnaround for a squad that had struggled through its recent stretch of games.
Grays Power Up at Halliwell Park
The offensive highlight of the Grays’ doubleheader came from Brandon Ross, who launched a three-run home run against the Brigham Peaches on Friday. The blast helped propel Pocatello to the sweep and gave the club’s offense a much-needed jolt after consecutive losses.
On the mound, pitcher Brayden Pieper delivered one of the standout individual performances of the early summer season, tossing a complete game one-hit shutout against Brigham. Pieper’s gem held the Peaches to a single hit across the entire contest, giving the Grays their defense-turned-dominance style of play that fans at Halliwell Park had been waiting to see.
The doubleheader sweep allowed the Grays to close out the week on a high note and reestablish momentum heading deeper into the summer schedule.
Chukars Claim Three Wins, Including Series Over Boise
Across the state in Idaho Falls, the Chukars kept their own winning ways going, collecting three victories during the week. Among those wins was a series over the Boise Hawks, played at Melaleuca Field, giving Idaho Falls a notable regional rivalry win.
The power display of the week for the Chukars came Saturday when Justin Trimble connected on a three-run homer against the RedPocket Mobiles. Despite the long ball, the Chukars dropped that particular Saturday contest, but the three wins overall made it a productive week for the club. Earlier in the week, the Chukars routed RedPocket 23-12 in a high-scoring affair, with a standout cycle performance by Ostrander, underscoring the team’s offensive firepower throughout the stretch.
Melaleuca Field continued to draw fans looking for affordable summer entertainment, with the Chukars providing plenty of action across their game slate.
What Comes Next
Both teams figure to carry their momentum into the next stretch of the summer baseball calendar. The Gate City Grays will look to build on their doubleheader sweep at Halliwell Park in Pocatello, hoping to extend their winning ways and continue climbing in the standings. The Idaho Falls Chukars, fresh off a three-win week and a series victory over the Boise Hawks, will aim to stay hot at Melaleuca Field.
Summer baseball in the region has historically been a popular draw for families and sports fans looking for live action at the local level. With pitching performances like Pieper’s one-hitter and big swings from Ross and Trimble, both rosters appear to be settling into form as the season progresses.
