Ammon Kicks Off Pool Season With Firefighter Fill Event and Icy Charity Plunge
The City of Ammon is launching its outdoor pool season this week with a pair of community events — one giving residents a close-up look at local firefighters in action, and another dropping 10,000 pounds of ice into the newly filled pool for a charity plunge.
Firefighters Take the Hose on Wednesday
On Wednesday, May 13, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., Ammon firefighters will fill the city swimming pool using fire hoses run directly from nearby hydrants. Residents are welcome to come watch the process, meet the crew, and get an up-close look at the fire trucks. Children who attend will receive a free firefighter hat.
The event marks an unofficial start to the summer season and gives families a chance to connect with the first responders who serve the community year-round.
Freezin for a Reason Returns Saturday
Three days after the pool fills, the city will host its annual cold-water charity event. “Freezin’ for a Reason” is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, at 2 p.m. Just before participants jump, Natural Spring Ice will donate 10,000 pounds of ice to be added to the pool — guaranteeing a genuinely frigid experience.
Entry is $15 per jumper. Registration includes a commemorative shirt and a swag bag. While early registration has closed, additional shirts and swag bags were ordered and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for day-of participants. Online registration remains open.
All proceeds raised through the event benefit local cancer patients through the Shannon Wilker Foundation, directing community fundraising dollars to families in the area facing cancer diagnoses.
Both events are free to attend as spectators, making them accessible to families throughout the Ammon area who want to kick off the summer season together. Community events like these have been a consistent part of the local calendar in eastern Idaho, where cities often combine civic outreach with charitable giving — much like the Upper Valley SAFE Initiative’s community awareness efforts that bring residents and local organizations together around shared goals.
What Comes Next
The Ammon pool is expected to open for regular public swimming following the two events. Residents interested in participating in the Freezin’ for a Reason plunge can register online through the city’s designated registration page. Those who miss early registration should plan to arrive with time to secure a shirt and swag bag before supplies run out. For more statewide community news, visit Idaho News.
