The National Weather Service in Pocatello issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning on August 22 from 2:32 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. MDT, alerting residents across southeast Idaho to dangerous weather moving through the region.

Two separate lines of severe thunderstorms tracked northeast at 25 mph each. The first storm system, positioned from Fort Hall to Portneuf Gap at 2:30 p.m., preceded a second line extending from Arbon Valley south of Springfield, both advancing into populated areas across Bannock County and surrounding communities.

Primary Hazards

Forecasters warned of 60 mph wind gusts capable of damaging roofs, siding, and trees. Quarter-size hail posed a significant threat to vehicles in the storm path. Heavy rainfall accompanying both systems raised the risk of flash flooding across the region.

The warning affected Pocatello, Chubbuck, Blackfoot, and Fort Hall, along with the eastern shore of the American Falls Reservoir and numerous other communities including Rose, Groveland, and Pocatello Airport.

Safety and Preparedness

Residents in affected areas were urged to seek shelter immediately, secure outdoor items, and avoid travel during the storms. The rapid movement of both systems meant the window for protective action was limited to roughly 45 minutes from the warning’s issuance.

Severe weather events across Bannock County have presented ongoing hazards to residents throughout the summer season. Recent flooding and storms have damaged homes and property on the Fort Hall Reservation, while accidents involving severe weather conditions have resulted in injuries on area roadways.

Residents should monitor local weather updates and heed National Weather Service warnings during storm season. Those with property damage from severe weather should document damage for insurance purposes and contact local authorities if emergency assistance is needed.
