Semi-truck rolls over on I-15 near Pocatello

Semi-Truck Rollover on Interstate 15 Near Pocatello, Idaho Claims Life of Utah Man

A commercial vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 15 near Pocatello claimed the life of a 63-year-old man from Layton, Utah, on Thursday afternoon, according to Idaho State Police. The crash occurred around 1:10 p.m. at mile marker 63 on northbound I-15, near the Portneuf Area exit, and prompted a multi-agency emergency response that left the right lane of travel blocked for several hours.

Idaho State Police investigators say the man was driving a 2020 Volvo tractor when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the right shoulder, struck a hillside, overturned, and came to rest on top of a guardrail. The driver was wearing a seatbelt but died at the scene. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the crash.

Multi-Agency Response Mobilized Along I-15 Corridor

The Bannock County Sheriff’s Office, the Bannock County Coroner’s Office, and Bannock County Search and Rescue responded to the scene alongside multiple emergency medical services agencies to assist Idaho State Police. The coordinated response reflects the scale of a fatal commercial vehicle crash on one of Southeast Idaho’s most heavily traveled stretches of interstate.

ISP spokesman Todd Orr urged motorists to exercise caution in the area while recovery efforts were underway. “People should make sure they slow down. Be careful about the emergency responders and recovery vehicles. They’re going to be out there for the next little while,” Orr said, according to reports from the scene.

The right lane of northbound I-15 remained closed through the afternoon and into the evening while investigators documented the crash scene and crews worked to remove the overturned semi-truck. Drivers in the area were encouraged to seek alternate routes or check real-time road conditions at 511.idaho.gov.

Investigation Ongoing as Officials Reconstruct the Crash

The cause of the crash had not been determined as of Thursday evening. Idaho State Police said the crash remains under active investigation. Authorities have not released information regarding the trucking company associated with the vehicle or the cargo the semi-truck was carrying at the time of the crash.

The stretch of I-15 near Pocatello and the Portneuf Area exit sees significant commercial truck traffic, serving as a primary north-south corridor connecting Southeast Idaho with Utah and points south. Fatal crashes involving commercial vehicles on this route are not uncommon, and safety advocates have consistently called for driver awareness, particularly regarding shoulder conditions and steep terrain along the hillside sections of the interstate near mile marker 63.

This was the latest in a series of serious crashes involving semi-trucks on I-15 in the Pocatello area.
