Pocatello Man Dies Following Medical Emergency and Crash on I-84

A 65-year-old Pocatello resident died Tuesday after suffering a medical emergency that led to a crash on Interstate 84 in Jerome County, according to reports from eastidahonews.com.

Idaho State Police responded to the scene near milepost 196.5 at approximately 11:50 a.m. Officers found that the driver of a westbound 2011 Toyota Avalon had experienced an unknown medical incident while operating the vehicle.

The car veered off the left side of the interstate, swerved back onto the roadway, and then traveled off the right side. The vehicle went down an embankment and struck an Idaho Transportation Department fence before coming to a stop.

The driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities have not released the man’s name.

Jerome County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Jerome Rural Fire Department personnel, and Magic Valley Paramedics assisted at the scene. Idaho State Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

This incident highlights the dangers of medical emergencies behind the wheel. While seat belts can mitigate injury in many collisions, they may not prevent fatality when a driver loses control due to sudden health issues. Interstate 84 is a major corridor for southeast Idaho traffic, and crashes often result in significant delays and resource deployment.
