Pocatello officials are holding a series of public meetings next week to gather resident input on proposed changes to the city’s zoning ordinances. The initiative, branded “Codeapalooza” by city staff, aims to align current land-use regulations with the comprehensive plan adopted in 2023.
The 2023 comprehensive plan established a framework for creating walkable neighborhoods and expanding housing options through varied architectural styles. It also prioritizes the efficient use of already-developed land within mixed-use zoning districts. City planners are now working to translate those broad goals into specific regulatory language.
Schedule and Locations
Residents can participate in four distinct sessions spread across late September and early October. Most events will take place at the Housing Alliance and Community Partnership Resource Center, located at 750 North 5th Avenue. The opening session will be held at the Pocatello City Council Chambers at 911 North 7th Avenue.
The schedule begins on Monday, Sept. 28, with an Opening Presentation and Mapping Workshop starting at 6 p.m. This initial meeting is designed to outline the project scope and allow residents to engage directly with mapping tools related to zoning changes.
Tuesday, Sept. 29, features a full day of engagement from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., including an Open Studio session where residents can drop in at any time. Three topical meetings are also scheduled that day:
- Open Space & Natural Resources: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Housing & Development: 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
- Community Character: 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The Open Studio continues on Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and concludes on Thursday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. These extended hours are intended to accommodate residents with varying work schedules.
A Virtual Work-in-Progress Presentation will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This online session will allow those unable to attend in person to review progress made during the earlier meetings.
Long-Term Impact
Jim Anglesey, a long-range senior planner for the city, emphasized the lasting nature of zoning decisions. He noted that development patterns established today will shape the physical landscape for decades.
“Once something is developed, it’s there for at least 20 years, if not more,” Anglesey said.
He described the upcoming meetings as a critical window for public engagement.
“(It’s) the prime opportunity for the public to engage with the consultants and with planning staff on how they want the city to develop,” Anglesey said.
Planning staff and external consultants will present updates throughout the week, incorporating feedback into the draft ordinances. The city has created a dedicated website, zoningpocatello.com, which hosts the full Codeapalooza schedule and additional project details.
