Pocatello City Hall and Police Department Placed on Brief Lockdown After Threat Report in Idaho

POCATELLO, Idaho — A reported threat against city employees prompted a temporary lockdown of Pocatello City Hall and the Pocatello Police Department on Wednesday morning, April 8, before officers located the suspect in neighboring Chubbuck and lifted the lockdown less than an hour after it began.

Pocatello police responded to the City Hall parking lot at approximately 11 a.m. after receiving a report that a male subject had made threats to harm department employees and was believed to be in the parking lot of the Pocatello Police Department. City of Pocatello Public Information Officer Marlise Irby confirmed that employees inside City Hall were instructed to lock down and remain inside the building while officers investigated.

Officers on scene also brought individuals who were in the parking lot inside the building as a precautionary measure, ensuring bystanders were out of potential harm’s way while the situation was assessed.

Both City Hall and Police Department Secured During Investigation

“Due to the seriousness of the threat and the subject’s reported proximity, both the Pocatello Police Department and the City of Pocatello offices were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure,” the Pocatello Police Department stated in a release issued Wednesday afternoon. The public was asked to avoid the area during the lockdown period.

The swift response by Pocatello officers led to the suspect being located in Chubbuck, and the lockdown was lifted at approximately 11:50 a.m. — roughly 50 minutes after it was initiated. Both the Pocatello Police Department and City offices had been placed on temporary lockdown while officers worked to confirm the nature and location of the threat.

With the suspect located outside of Pocatello city limits, jurisdiction over the investigation was passed to the Chubbuck Police Department, which is now leading the case. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

Threat Response Highlights Coordinated Law Enforcement Efforts

Wednesday’s lockdown underscored the coordination between Pocatello and Chubbuck law enforcement when threats cross municipal boundaries. The two cities, which border each other in the heart of Bannock County, frequently cooperate on public safety matters given their shared geography along the I-15 corridor.

The speed with which the situation was resolved — from the initial call to the lifting of the lockdown in under an hour — reflects the capability of local law enforcement to respond to credible threats against public buildings and city employees. Pocatello police moved quickly to secure the premises, protect individuals in the parking lot, and track the reported subject to his location in Chubbuck before any harm occurred.

Threats against government employees and public buildings remain a serious matter under Idaho law, and the referral of the investigation to Chubbuck police indicates the case is ongoing. No charges or arrests had been publicly announced as of the time of this report.

This incident follows a period of heightened attention to public safety incidents in the Pocatello area. A separate fatal shooting incident on Tank Farm Road in Bannock County earlier this year also drew significant law enforcement response and community concern.

City of Pocatello officials have not released additional details regarding the identity of the suspect or the specific nature of the threats made against department employees. Residents and city employees are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately.

What Comes Next

The investigation into Wednesday’s threat has been handed to the Chubbuck Police Department, which is expected to continue looking into the nature of the threats made against Pocatello city employees. No public timeline for the investigation’s conclusion has been provided. Bannock County News will continue to monitor this story and provide updates as new information is released by authorities.
