Path to popular Pocatello nature garden closing for major upgrade project

Pocatello Nature Area Path to Close Temporarily for Donated Pathway Upgrade

Idaho Fish and Game Temporarily Closes Access to Ardith’s Garden at Edson Fichter Nature Area

POCATELLO, Idaho — A popular pathway at one of Pocatello’s most-visited natural spaces is getting a significant upgrade, thanks to the generosity of a local business. Idaho Fish and Game announced that access to Ardith’s Garden within the Edson Fichter Nature Area will be temporarily closed beginning Monday, May 4, while construction crews complete improvements to the pathway connecting the amphitheater to the garden.

The project is being funded entirely through donated construction services from Iron Horse Asphalt, a Pocatello-based business. The upgrade will provide visitors with a newly constructed pathway leading from the amphitheater directly to the beloved garden area, replacing what had been a section in need of improvement.

Idaho Fish and Game emphasized that while the Ardith’s Garden access path will be closed during construction, the main pathway through the Edson Fichter Nature Area will remain open to the public throughout the duration of the project. Visitors are asked to respect the closure boundaries in the interest of public safety while construction crews are on site.

Community Collaboration Drives the Improvement Project

Regional Habitat Biologist Maria Pacioretty praised the community effort that made the project possible. “Once again, members of our community have stepped up to support another improvement project at Edson Fichter Nature Area,” Pacioretty said. “We are so grateful to the Friends of Edson Fichter Nature Area group for coordinating this effort and to Iron Horse Asphalt for donating all the work! This project would not be possible without this collaboration.”

The project reflects the kind of private-sector generosity and civic partnership that can deliver meaningful public improvements without placing a burden on taxpayers. By donating the full scope of construction work, Iron Horse Asphalt is providing a lasting amenity to the thousands of Pocatello residents who visit the nature area annually.

The Friends of Edson Fichter Nature Area, a community volunteer organization, played a key role in coordinating the project — continuing a pattern of civic involvement that has helped improve and maintain the nature area over the years. This type of collaboration between state resource managers, local businesses, and community volunteers represents a model of community-driven conservation that keeps government costs in check while delivering real results for residents.

This project is not the only community planning effort focused on Pocatello’s outdoor spaces this season. The public has also been invited to provide input on the Rock Creek master plan, another initiative aimed at improving local recreational areas in the region.

About the Edson Fichter Nature Area

Owned and managed by Idaho Fish and Game, the Edson Fichter Nature Area is a 40-acre outdoor destination located in Pocatello that offers a wide variety of recreational and educational opportunities. The site features a fishing pond, a sporting dog pond, paved trails accessible to both walkers and cyclists, two pollinator-friendly gardens, direct access to the Portneuf River, and ample wildlife-watching opportunities.

The nature area serves as a green corridor within the city and draws visitors of all ages seeking outdoor recreation close to home. With two pollinator-friendly gardens — including Ardith’s Garden — the site also plays a role in local conservation education and habitat preservation efforts.

The upcoming pathway improvement will enhance accessibility and safety for visitors navigating between the amphitheater and garden sections of the property, making the nature area even more user-friendly once construction is complete.

Visitors to the Edson Fichter Nature Area during the construction period are reminded to follow posted signage and stay on open trails to ensure their safety and allow crews to complete the work efficiently.

What Comes Next

Idaho Fish and Game has not announced a specific timeline for completion of the pathway construction, but the agency indicated the closure will remain in effect until work is finished. The main trail through the nature area will stay accessible to the public in the meantime. Once complete, the new paved pathway from the amphitheater to Ardith’s Garden will be open to all visitors. Residents interested in community events and other local activities this spring can also look ahead to the IFYAC production of The Scarlet Pimpernel, performing as the group’s spring musical. Updates on the nature area project are expected from Idaho Fish and Game as construction progresses.
