NWS Pocatello Issues Wind Advisory for Southeast Idaho Through Saturday Evening

The National Weather Service office in Pocatello has issued a Wind Advisory covering a broad stretch of southeast and south-central Idaho, effective from early Saturday morning through 9:00 PM MDT on June 7. The advisory was posted at 2:18 AM MDT and encompasses multiple geographic zones across the region.

Forecasters are warning residents and travelers to expect sustained southwest winds ranging from 25 to 35 mph throughout the day, with gusts reaching as high as 50 mph in most covered areas. Portions of the Snake Plain could see even stronger gusts, with peak winds potentially hitting 55 mph in those locations.

Areas Under the Advisory

The Wind Advisory applies to a wide swath of south and southeast Idaho. The zones listed by the National Weather Service include the Beaverhead-Lemhi Highlands, the Centennial Mountains and Island Park area, the Eastern Magic Valley, the Shoshone and Lava Beds region, the Arco and Mud Lake Desert, and both the Lower and Upper Snake River Plain. Together, these zones cover a large portion of the state’s southern and eastern interior.

Bannock County and the greater Pocatello-Chubbuck area fall within the general advisory footprint, meaning residents throughout Southeast Idaho should expect blustery conditions for much of the day Saturday.

Driving and Outdoor Hazards

Weather officials are flagging several specific risks tied to the high winds. Motorists traveling in the affected areas should be prepared for gusty conditions that can make vehicles difficult to handle, particularly high-profile vehicles such as box trucks, RVs, trailers, and semi-trucks. Drivers of those vehicle types are advised to exercise heightened caution, especially on exposed stretches of highway such as I-15 and I-86.

Loose outdoor items left unsecured — lawn furniture, trash cans, signage, tarps, or any similar objects — are at risk of being displaced or sent airborne in winds of this strength. Property owners are encouraged to bring those items inside or tie them down before the advisory period reaches its peak.

For residents near area lakes and reservoirs, boating conditions are expected to be hazardous. The National Weather Service is advising that strong winds will produce rough wave action across open water, creating dangerous conditions for small watercraft. Boaters are urged to avoid going out on the water during the advisory, or to exercise extreme caution if they choose to do so.

Preparedness Reminders

Wind events of this magnitude are not uncommon in southeast Idaho, particularly during late spring and early summer when frontal systems move through the Snake River Plain corridor. However, gusts approaching 55 mph carry enough force to cause property damage, downed power lines, and scattered debris on roadways.

Residents should keep an eye on local conditions throughout the day and monitor updates from the National Weather Service Pocatello office as the advisory progresses. Power outages are possible in the event that wind levels exceed forecasted thresholds, and utility customers should have emergency supplies on hand as a precaution.

Public safety concerns extend beyond the weather itself during active advisories. Emergency services personnel in Bannock County and surrounding jurisdictions remain on standby for weather-related incidents throughout the day. Residents dealing with unrelated emergencies or safety concerns can also stay informed through local law enforcement channels — for example, recent public safety news including a Pocatello stalking case involving property damage underscores the ongoing work of local officers serving the community.

What Comes Next

The Wind Advisory is set to expire at 9:00 PM MDT on Saturday, June 7. Residents can expect wind conditions to gradually ease through the evening hours as the advisory window closes. The National Weather Service Pocatello office will issue updates or extensions if conditions warrant a change in the forecast. Bannock County residents are encouraged to check weather.gov for the latest forecasts and any additional advisories that may be issued for the area ahead of the advisory’s expiration.
