NWS Pocatello Issues Wind Advisory for Southeast Idaho Through Monday Evening

The National Weather Service office in Pocatello issued a Wind Advisory late Saturday evening, warning residents across southeast Idaho to prepare for strong and potentially dangerous wind conditions lasting through Monday night.

The advisory, issued at 8:48 PM MDT on June 28, remains in effect until 9:00 PM MDT on June 29. Forecasters are calling for southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph throughout the advisory period, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph at times.

What to Expect During the Advisory

Sustained winds at those speeds can create hazardous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors or on the road. High-profile vehicles — including trucks, RVs, trailers, and campers — are particularly vulnerable to sudden gusts and drivers should exercise extra caution, reduce speeds, and maintain firm control of the wheel.

Residents should also secure any unsecured objects around their properties before winds pick up. Lawn furniture, trash cans, signage, and similar items can become projectiles in 45 mph gusts, posing risks to people and property alike.

The advisory comes during a period of already-dry conditions across the region, raising concerns about wildfire risk. High winds can rapidly spread any fire that ignites. Pocatello fire officials have already urged residents to take precautions heading into the Fourth of July holiday weekend, and Sunday’s wind event adds urgency to those warnings. Residents are asked to avoid burning debris and to report any smoke or fire immediately.

Hazards on Area Lakes and Waterways

The National Weather Service specifically flagged risks for boaters and anyone planning recreational activity on area lakes. Strong southwest winds combined with rough wave action will create hazardous conditions for small watercraft, and boaters are advised to use extra caution or stay off the water entirely during the advisory window. Small craft can be overtaken quickly when wind speeds reach this level, and capsizing is a real danger even for experienced boaters.

Anyone already out on the water when winds escalate should head to shore immediately and wait for conditions to improve before resuming activities.

What Comes Next

The Wind Advisory is set to expire at 9:00 PM MDT on Sunday, June 29. Residents should monitor updates from the National Weather Service Pocatello in case the advisory is extended or conditions change ahead of schedule. Once winds subside, property owners should check their yards and structures for any damage or debris that may have accumulated during the event.

With the Fourth of July just days away and dry conditions persisting across Bannock County, residents are encouraged to remain weather-aware through the holiday weekend. Any outdoor fires, fireworks, or recreational activities should be approached with caution until the region sees measurable moisture. Pocatello firefighters have already responded to at least one brush fire on the West Bench near homes and a power substation in recent days, underscoring how quickly conditions can escalate.
