New Portneuf Air Rescue helicopter to debut at Thursday open house

Portneuf Medical Center to Unveil New Air Rescue Helicopter at Thursday Open House in Pocatello

Community Invited to Meet Flight Crews and Tour New Aircraft

POCATELLO — Portneuf Medical Center will give the public a first look at a new medical helicopter Thursday morning, as the hospital officially debuts its expanded air rescue program at an open house event on its Pocatello campus.

The new aircraft, an Airbus H130, is the product of a partnership between Portneuf Medical Center and Global Medical Response, a national emergency medical transport organization. The addition is aimed at strengthening rapid-response capabilities across Southeast Idaho, a region where rural terrain and long distances between communities can significantly delay access to critical care.

The open house runs from 11 a.m. at the hospital’s helipad, located at 777 Hospital Way. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the helicopter and meet the flight and medical crews who will operate it. Hospital leadership and company officials are expected to be on hand for the event, which is free and open to all members of the public.

Helicopter Name to Be Revealed at Event

One of the highlights of Thursday’s gathering will be the announcement of the helicopter’s official name, chosen through a community naming contest. The child who submitted the winning name will be recognized at the event.

Matt Strauss, regional director for Global Medical Response, said the open house is meant to help the community connect with the program. “Having the aircraft named by a local child also reflects the community’s connection to the program and the role it plays in the region’s emergency response,” Strauss said.

The helicopter will operate under the Portneuf Air Rescue banner, providing rapid air transport for patients in areas where ground ambulances face significant delays due to distance or difficult geography. Officials say the expanded program is intended to improve outcomes for patients in emergencies where time is a critical factor.

Air Transport Fills a Critical Gap in Southeast Idaho

Southeast Idaho’s geography presents real challenges for emergency medical response. Communities spread across mountainous and high-desert terrain can be well beyond the reach of standard ground transport within the time windows that matter most in trauma and cardiac events. Air rescue programs like Portneuf’s are designed to bridge that gap, placing advanced medical care closer to patients who might otherwise face extended transport times.

The arrival of a newer aircraft signals a continued investment in regional emergency infrastructure at a time when rural healthcare access remains a priority for communities across Bannock County and the broader region. Public safety operations in the area have seen increased attention in recent months, as a tense standoff near Pocatello earlier this year demonstrated the complexity of emergency response scenarios that local crews routinely face.

Thursday’s event offers residents a rare chance to see the equipment and personnel behind one of the region’s most important emergency services up close.

What Comes Next

Following the open house, the Airbus H130 is expected to enter active service as part of the Portneuf Air Rescue program, handling emergency air transport requests across Southeast Idaho. No specific launch date for flight operations was announced. Residents interested in attending Thursday’s event can go directly to the helipad at 777 Hospital Way in Pocatello beginning at 11 a.m. The event requires no registration and is free to attend.
