Idaho Primary Election Underway; Several Bonneville County Polling Sites Relocated

Voters across eastern Idaho are heading to the polls today for the state’s primary election, with races that will determine party nominees for congressional seats, state legislative positions, and local offices.

Secretary of State Phil McGrane emphasized the importance of primary participation, noting that ballots include contests ranging from Idaho’s congressional delegation to local precinct committee representatives. McGrane encouraged all eligible voters to make a plan and cast their ballots before polling places close at 8 p.m.

Polling Location Changes in Bonneville County

Election officials in Bonneville County have moved several polling sites for today’s voting. Residents who previously cast ballots at Dora Erickson Elementary should now report to Elks Lodge at 640 East Elva Street. Those assigned to Hampton Inn have been redirected to Lookout Credit Union on East Sunnyside Road.

Additional location changes affect voters at 4-H Education Complex, Taylorview Middle School, and Sunnyside Elementary School. County officials are urging residents to verify their correct polling place before leaving home to avoid confusion.

Voter ID and Party Registration Requirements

Idaho operates under a closed primary system, which has been in effect since 2011. This means voters must be registered with a political party to participate in that party’s primary election. The law does allow political parties to authorize participation by unaffiliated voters or members of other parties if the party notifies the Secretary of State in writing, but such arrangements are determined by each party.

All voters must bring an approved form of identification to their polling location. Election officials are reminding residents to double-check both their registration status and acceptable ID before heading out to vote.

Absentee Ballot Deadline Approaches

For those who requested absentee ballots but have not yet returned them, county election officials are advising against mailing ballots today. Instead, voters should hand-deliver their completed ballots directly to the county elections office before the deadline tonight.

Voters who are in line at their polling place by 8 p.m. will still be permitted to cast their ballots, even if the voting process extends beyond the official closing time.

What Comes Next

Election results will begin coming in after polls close this evening. The outcomes of today’s primary contests will determine which candidates advance to the November general election ballot. Key races being watched across the region include legislative seats that could influence state policy on education funding, infrastructure development, property tax relief, and growth management. Winners in congressional primaries will move forward to compete for Idaho’s seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

County election offices will continue processing and counting ballots after polls close, with unofficial results expected to be available throughout the evening and into the early morning hours.
