Farm Bureau Insurance Company of Idaho completed its acquisition of Mountain West Farm Bureau Insurance Company on Sept. 1, consolidating operations under a single corporate structure while maintaining distinct regional identities.
The deal places the combined entity’s headquarters in Pocatello, Idaho. Todd Argall, president and CEO of the Idaho-based insurer, emphasized that the Laramie, Wyoming location will continue to operate as a service center.
“We’re not walking away from Laramie,” Argall said.
Financial Stabilization
The acquisition addresses financial strain that Mountain West faced following a difficult 2024. Inflation drove up repair costs, and severe weather events placed significant pressure on property insurers across the industry. Because Mountain West operated in a narrow geographic territory, it was particularly vulnerable to repeated bad weather in the same region.
Profitability issues centered primarily on homeowners and personal insurance lines. The Idaho company has recapitalized Mountain West with new funds to rebuild its financial reserves. The stated goal is ensuring the insurer can pay claims for accidents or hailstorms without disruption.
Mountain West began seeking a partner in 2025 after identifying the need for greater scale and diversification. A larger footprint increases resilience against regional catastrophic losses. Idaho carries significant wildfire exposure, while Mountain West’s territory sees more hail and wind losses. The companies complement one another regarding risk exposure.
Operational Continuity
Policyholders in Wyoming and Montana will see little surface change. The Mountain West name remains in use in those states, and agents and employees stay in place. Both companies are Farm Bureau insurers that previously collaborated on technology and employee programs.
Farm Bureau Insurance Company of Idaho reorganized several years ago at the direction of its board. The company changed its name from Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company and adopted a holding company structure to enable acquisitions while keeping brand names intact.
“People make the difference in any organization, and the companies coming together have a tremendous amount of talent that the organization as a whole will be able to leverage to improve and to get stronger,” Argall said.
Future Growth
The combined company expects savings on reinsurance and technology costs. Lower expenses may lead to more competitive rates for customers. Underwriting standards, including geographic concentration limits, remain in place to manage risk.
Leadership growth will focus on Pocatello, though hybrid and remote work options remain available for employees. The organization is affiliated with Farm Bureau federations in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Washington.
The company plans to remain the top writer of farm insurance in Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. It also intends to expand its commercial insurance business in Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. The acquisition marks a strategic move to strengthen market position while preserving local agency relationships.
