Calakas Tacos & Miches is preparing to host its second annual celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day in Idaho Falls this week. The local business, co-owned by Liliana Sanchez, has expanded the event into a two-day festival featuring music, food vendors, and family activities.
The festivities begin on Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Waterfront venue located at 1220 Event Center Drive. Doors open at 2 p.m., with events running until 8 p.m. The second day of the celebration takes place on Wednesday at the Idaho Falls Greenbelt Bandshell, 755 Memorial Drive, starting shortly after 5 p.m.
Sanchez emphasized that the goal of the gathering is community building. “The purpose of it is to unite our community to make it bigger and stronger,” Sanchez said.
The event commemorates the historic El Grito de Dolores, which marks the beginning of Mexico’s war for independence from Spain. While the official holiday falls on September 16, the local celebration spans the preceding weekend and early week. Traditionally, the president of Mexico recites the cry of Dolores to honor the occasion.
Attendees can expect a variety of entertainment options across both days. The lineup includes musical performances by Alvaro y su Tecnobada Vallarta, Los Beristains, and DJ Guero. Family-friendly attractions include a mechanical bull, clowns, and a car and truck show. A contest for the best Grito will also be held.
Food trucks and local vendors will be present to serve attendees. The business aims to replicate the success of its previous events, which have drawn significant crowds. Last year’s Cinco de Mayo event attracted an estimated 5,000 community members, setting a high bar for attendance at this Independence Day festival.
Organizers are planning for all weather conditions. “Sunny, rain, snow. However, the weather, we will be going,” Sanchez said.
The event offers a chance for residents to engage with local culture and support small businesses in the Idaho Falls area. With activities scheduled at two prominent community venues, the festival provides multiple opportunities for participation throughout the week.
