Grand Teton Mall Security Guard Removed After Video Shows Alleged Assault of Idaho Falls Woman

Idaho National Guard armory

A security guard at Grand Teton Mall in Idaho Falls has been pulled from duty following a viral video that appears to show the officer physically confronting a woman who was taking photos inside the shopping center. The footage has drawn widespread attention online, accumulating more than 400,000 views on TikTok since it was posted.

The woman believed to have filmed and posted the video, identified as Alyssa Bratcher, was at the mall with her girlfriend when the incident unfolded on a recent Saturday. According to accounts of the encounter, the two women were taking photos in the mall when a security guard — identified only by the last name Hansen — approached and told them they would be banned from the property.

What the Video Shows

The footage captures a verbal argument between Bratcher and the guard, who was wearing a yellow uniform. During the exchange, the guard called Bratcher “stupid.” The situation escalated when the guard lunged closer to the woman and shoved her. The officer also appeared to swipe at a phone being held by someone else nearby, apparently attempting to knock it from their hands.

Other mall security personnel arrived on scene and, according to Bratcher, told her that the original guard had acted improperly. Bratcher and her companion filed a report with the mall before leaving.

A review of the mall’s Code of Conduct found no specific policy prohibiting photography inside the building, raising questions about the basis for the initial confrontation.

Mall and Police Respond

Grand Teton Mall’s public relations manager for GGP, Claudia Ilagan, confirmed the guard’s removal in a statement, saying, “The officer was removed from duty and a review of the incident is now underway by the security company.”

The Idaho Falls Police Department has been made aware of the situation and is looking into the matter, though officials noted that no formal police report had yet been received as of when the story became public. Whether the investigation leads to criminal charges against the guard remains to be seen.

The swift removal of the guard from duty suggests the security company and mall management took the video footage seriously once it became public. Security personnel operating in commercial spaces are generally held to professional standards of conduct, and any use of physical force outside of those standards can carry both civil and criminal consequences.

Broader Questions About Mall Security Standards

The incident has sparked discussion about the appropriate scope of authority for private security guards, who do not carry the same legal powers as sworn law enforcement officers. While private security personnel can ask individuals to leave a property and, in some circumstances, detain individuals for suspected criminal activity, physically shoving a patron over a dispute about photography — an activity not prohibited by the mall’s own rules — raises serious liability concerns for both the individual officer and the company employing him.

The widespread circulation of the video underscores how quickly incidents involving alleged misconduct by authority figures can gain public scrutiny in the era of social media. Whether this level of attention accelerates or shapes the outcome of the ongoing review by the security company is unclear, but the public nature of the footage leaves little ambiguity about what occurred.

No formal charges had been announced at the time of reporting, and the investigation by Idaho Falls police remains active. The security company conducting its own internal review has not publicly identified the guard by full name or provided additional details about the process or expected timeline.

Bratcher and her companion, who were exercising no right prohibited by the mall’s own policies, were at minimum entitled to be treated with basic professionalism — a standard the viral footage suggests was not met.

What Comes Next

The Idaho Falls Police Department is expected to determine whether the physical contact captured in the video rises to the level of criminal assault under Idaho law. Separately, the security company’s internal review will likely decide whether the guard’s removal is permanent. Mall management at Grand Teton Mall has not indicated whether any additional policy changes are being considered in response to the incident. Bratcher and her companion’s formal complaint filed with the mall is also part of the record as all parties move forward.
