FBI Distinguishes Fake Extortion Attempts From Credible Leads in Nancy Guthrie Case

Federal investigators have determined that some of the ransom notes sent in connection with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance were fraudulent extortion schemes, while others remain under active investigation as potentially legitimate kidnapping demands, the FBI Phoenix office said this week.

The 84-year-old vanished from her Arizona home on the morning of February 1, leaving behind her phone and essential medications. Five months into the investigation, authorities continue to pursue leads in what remains a kidnapping-for-ransom case, with the FBI assisting local law enforcement.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department coordinates the inquiry, which has been complicated by multiple communications claiming to contain information about Guthrie’s whereabouts or condition. Ransom notes and emails have arrived at news outlets and other recipients, creating a challenge for investigators attempting to separate genuine threats from opportunistic fraud.

Sorting Real Demands From Hoaxes

An FBI Phoenix spokesperson told reporters that distinguishing credible leads from false claims remains a critical part of the investigation. “Some (of the notes) have been deemed to be extortion attempts without legitimacy. Other ransom demands may potentially be legitimate and are still being investigated as such,” the agency stated.

The initial ransom note demanded millions of dollars. A subsequent message claimed Guthrie had died shortly after her abduction. Additional communications reached TMZ, including emails requesting $100,000 and earlier notes asserting that Guthrie was “scared but OK.”

The flood of messages has required investigators to assess the credibility and consistency of each communication, cross-referencing details with known facts about the case. The presence of fraudulent extortion attempts has added complexity to the search, as authorities must devote resources to validating claims while pursuing genuinely promising leads.

Family Continues Public Appeal

Throughout the investigation, Guthrie’s family has maintained a public plea for information. Savannah Guthrie, Nancy’s daughter and a prominent television personality, used her platform to appeal to viewers of the “Today” show for assistance. The family also posted a message on social media in response to one of the ransom communications, stating “We received your message, and we understand.”

Savannah Guthrie reiterated her commitment to finding her mother, saying “We love our mom and we’ll never stop looking for her. Never.”

Investigation Continues

The case remains active and ongoing. Authorities have not announced any significant developments or arrests, and the determination that some ransom notes are illegitimate does not narrow the scope of the investigation—it instead clarifies which communications warrant continued pursuit. The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department continue to work jointly on the case, with investigators evaluating new information as it arrives.

Anyone with information about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance is encouraged to contact the FBI or local law enforcement.

What Comes Next: Federal and local investigators will continue sorting through incoming communications while pursuing leads deemed credible. The public appeal through media channels remains an active strategy to generate tips from the public. The determination of which ransom notes are fraudulent versus legitimate may eventually help narrow investigative focus to the most promising leads in the case.
