Driver killed in semi-truck rollover on I-15 south of Pocatello

Semi-Truck Driver Killed in Single-Vehicle Rollover on Interstate 15 South of Pocatello, Idaho

Fatal Crash Closes Northbound Lane Near Portneuf Exit

A semi-truck driver is dead following a single-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 15 south of Pocatello, Idaho, Thursday afternoon, according to Idaho State Police. The crash marked another deadly incident along a stretch of highway that has seen multiple commercial vehicle accidents in recent months.

Idaho State Police Lieutenant Todd Orr confirmed the accident occurred at approximately 1:10 p.m. near milepost 63, just south of the Portneuf exit and the North Old Highway 91 interchange. The driver, a 63-year-old man from Layton, Utah, drove off the right shoulder of the roadway for reasons that remain under investigation, struck the hillside, and overturned before coming to rest on top of a guardrail.

Despite wearing a seatbelt, the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the crash site. His name had not been officially released as of the time of this report.

The crash is the latest in a series of serious commercial vehicle incidents along the I-15 corridor in Southeast Idaho. Earlier this year, one person was killed in a separate semi-truck crash that also left Interstate 15 near Pocatello partially blocked, raising ongoing concerns about commercial vehicle safety along the heavily traveled route connecting Idaho to Utah.

Lane Closures and Traffic Impacts

Following the crash, the rightmost northbound lane of I-15 near milepost 63 remained blocked as Idaho State Police, emergency crews, and recovery vehicles worked to clear the wreckage. Drivers in the area were being directed into the left lane, causing slowdowns through the corridor south of Pocatello.

Lieutenant Orr urged motorists traveling through the area to exercise caution and reduce speeds while emergency and recovery operations remained active. Drivers are encouraged to allow additional travel time and stay alert for emergency personnel and equipment along the shoulder.

The closure impacted one of the primary routes linking Pocatello and the greater Bannock County area to points south, including the Utah border. I-15 carries a significant volume of commercial freight traffic daily, and incidents involving large trucks can create extended disruption to both passenger and commercial travel.

The investigation into the cause of the crash remains open. Idaho State Police have not yet released details regarding road conditions, mechanical failure, or other potential contributing factors at the time of the incident. As is standard practice in fatal crash investigations, authorities will conduct a thorough review before drawing conclusions.

A Persistent Safety Challenge on I-15

The I-15 corridor through Bannock County and Southeast Idaho has been the site of multiple serious crashes involving commercial vehicles in recent memory. A separate incident earlier this year saw lanes blocked after a semi struck a concrete barrier near Heyburn, underscoring the recurring nature of large-vehicle accidents along the region’s primary interstate artery.

Safety officials and law enforcement have repeatedly emphasized the importance of driver attentiveness, especially among commercial operators who spend extended hours behind the wheel. Fatigue, distraction, and adverse road conditions are among the leading factors investigators examine following single-vehicle commercial crashes.

The Portneuf exit area where Thursday’s fatal crash occurred sits in a stretch of I-15 that includes grade changes, interchange merges, and shoulder conditions that can pose challenges for large vehicles, particularly those carrying heavy loads at highway speeds.

Idaho State Police continue to respond to and investigate crashes along this corridor, coordinating with local emergency services, county officials, and transportation authorities to manage scenes and restore normal traffic flow as safely and efficiently as possible.

What Comes Next

Idaho State Police are expected to release additional details as the investigation progresses, including the identity of the victim and any preliminary findings regarding the cause of the crash. Motorists who regularly travel I-15 south of Pocatello are encouraged to monitor Idaho 511 and official Idaho State Police communications for updated road conditions and lane status.
