A 37-year-old Ammon man is facing three felony counts of aggravated assault after allegedly drawing a firearm on a group of teenagers at a local park late Monday night, according to Bonneville County court records.
The incident unfolded around 11:15 p.m. Monday at McCowin Park, where an altercation broke out near the pickleball courts. Authorities say Shane Sutton pulled a gun during the confrontation before fleeing the scene in a utility truck. Officers located and arrested Sutton at a gas station on North Woodruff Avenue shortly after.
Sutton was booked into the Bonneville County Jail on three counts of aggravated assault. He appeared before a Bonneville County judge on Tuesday, July 14, for a formal arraignment. The court set bond at $75,000, and a preliminary hearing has been scheduled for July 28, 2026, at 1:00 p.m.
What Sutton Is Accused Of
Aggravated assault in Idaho is generally defined as an unlawful threat to commit violence upon another person, coupled with the use of a deadly weapon. With three counts filed, prosecutors appear to be charging Sutton in connection with multiple individuals who were allegedly threatened during the confrontation. The teens at the pickleball courts were the apparent targets of the alleged gun display, though the specific circumstances that triggered the altercation have not been publicly detailed.
Sutton’s $75,000 bond reflects the seriousness with which the court is treating the matter. Each count of aggravated assault carries significant potential penalties under Idaho law, and a preliminary hearing later this month will determine whether the case moves forward to district court.
What Comes Next
Sutton is due back in Bonneville County Court on July 28 at 1:00 p.m. for his preliminary hearing. At that proceeding, a judge will evaluate whether sufficient probable cause exists to bind the case over for trial. If the court finds cause to proceed, the matter would advance to district court for further proceedings.
The case is unfolding in Bonneville County, not Bannock County, but it is a reminder that confrontations involving firearms in public spaces — particularly those frequented by young people — carry serious legal consequences across Southeast Idaho. Bannock County residents dealing with similar public safety concerns can review related recent cases, including a Bannock County man facing felony sex charges involving a minor, with a preliminary hearing also approaching later this month.
As of publication, Sutton’s arraignment is complete and the case is proceeding through the Bonneville County court system. No additional charges have been publicly announced at this stage.
