Pocatello High School Hosts District 5 Track and Field Championships

Southeast Idaho Athletes Compete for State Berths

Pocatello High School’s Lookout Credit Union Field served as the venue this week for the 4A-5A District 5 track and field championships, drawing hundreds of student-athletes from across southeastern Idaho. The meet determined district champions and qualified competitors for the upcoming state championships.

Schools from the 4A and 5A classifications throughout the region sent their top performers to compete in events ranging from sprints and distance races to field events including the triple jump, long jump, shot put, and discus. The competition took place over multiple days, with athletes vying for coveted spots at next week’s state meet.

Local Competitors Shine on Home Track

Pocatello High School senior Jack Enslinger was among the local athletes competing at the district championships. Enslinger participated in the triple jump, one of several field events held during the multi-day competition. The senior represented the Indians on their home track as Pocatello High School hosted the district meet.

The championships featured dozens of individual and relay events across both boys’ and girls’ divisions. Track events included short sprints, middle-distance races, distance runs, hurdles, and relay competitions, while field events encompassed jumping and throwing disciplines.

District Championships Set Stage for State

The District 5 meet serves as a critical qualifying competition for Idaho’s 4A and 5A state track and field championships. Athletes who placed high enough in their respective events earned the right to advance to the state meet, scheduled for the following week. District meets across Idaho determine which competitors will represent their regions at the state level.

Southeastern Idaho’s track and field programs have produced competitive athletes across multiple classifications in recent years. The 4A and 5A divisions represent the larger high schools in the state, with 5A being the top classification for Idaho high school athletics. Pocatello High School competes in the 5A division as one of the region’s larger institutions.

The district championships showcase the culmination of months of training and regular-season competition for athletes from schools throughout the region. Competitors train year-round in many cases, working toward peak performance during the championship season in late spring.

What Comes Next

Athletes who qualified at the District 5 championships will advance to the Idaho 4A and 5A state track and field meet. The state championships bring together the top performers from all districts across Idaho to crown state champions in each event and determine all-state honors.

State meet results will determine which athletes and relay teams finish their seasons as Idaho state champions in their respective classifications and events. For seniors like Enslinger, the state meet represents the final high school competition of their athletic careers, while underclassmen who qualify gain valuable championship experience for future seasons.

The state meet typically features the fastest times and longest distances of the season, as Idaho’s top track and field athletes compete on a neutral site with optimal conditions. Results from the championships will close out the 2026 outdoor track and field season for Idaho high schools in the 4A and 5A classifications.
