A Pocatello man is recovering from severe injuries — including a severed artery, a torn liver, and a dangerous pressure condition in his leg — after a motorcycle crash on Yellowstone Avenue left him hospitalized and facing a lengthy road to recovery.
Skyler Miles, who was on his way to the first day of a new job Monday morning, had just left Harbor Freight with tools when another vehicle pulled out in front of him at an intersection near Walmart. The impact, which occurred at an estimated 35 to 40 miles per hour, pinned and crushed his leg against the other vehicle — severing an artery in his calf and causing internal damage to his liver.
As of Friday, Miles had undergone four surgeries and remained hospitalized. His wife, Nakita Miles, said emergency responders rushed him into surgery, administered a blood transfusion, and admitted him to the intensive care unit following the collision.
Compartment Syndrome Added to Serious Injury Toll
Doctors later identified a complicating diagnosis: compartment syndrome, a condition in which blood accumulating from the damaged artery created dangerous pressure inside the leg, putting Miles at risk of permanent tissue loss. The condition is considered a medical emergency and required additional surgical intervention.
Despite the severity of the crash, Nakita Miles said her husband is showing early signs of progress — and that doctors expect more procedures ahead, potentially including skin grafts and muscle repair work.
“He is extremely lucky that he didn’t bleed out from the severed artery,” Nakita said. “This accident could’ve been much worse, and we are grateful to still have him here with us.”
One hopeful sign: Miles has regained some movement in his toes, which doctors consider a positive indicator as he continues to recover in the hospital.
Family Faces Mounting Costs; Community Response Grows
The crash has left the Miles family — Skyler, Nakita, and their four children, who range in age from 3 to 15 — facing significant financial strain. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover medical bills and the extended physical therapy expected during recovery. The timeline for that recovery remains uncertain.
“We don’t know how long his recovery will take, and we don’t want finances to burden this incredible family while he heals,” the fundraiser states.
The family extended thanks to off-duty nurses, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel who responded at the scene and helped stabilize Miles before he was transported for surgery. Their quick response is credited with helping prevent a potentially fatal outcome. Southeast Idaho residents have benefited from expanded emergency air transport resources as well — the Portneuf Air Rescue team recently debuted a new helicopter, adding critical capacity for trauma situations across the region.
Nakita Miles is also using the incident as a public safety reminder, urging drivers to take additional care when checking for motorcyclists before entering intersections.
“Take those extra seconds to check and double-check for bikes,” she said.
Motorcycle crashes remain a serious concern across Southeast Idaho, particularly as warmer months bring more riders onto the road. Public safety incidents involving vehicles on area roads have kept first responders active in recent weeks — including a case in which a local man was found alive after disappearing from a suspicious crash near Mink Creek.
What Comes Next
Skyler Miles faces additional surgeries and a prolonged rehabilitation process, with the full scope of his recovery still uncertain. Doctors will continue to evaluate the need for skin grafts and further repair to damaged muscle tissue. The family is asking for community support through their GoFundMe as they navigate both the medical and financial challenges ahead.
