Idaho Falls Aquatic Center to Offer Free Youth Swim Lessons Saturday
The Wes Deist Aquatic Center in Idaho Falls is opening its pool doors at no charge this Saturday, May 9, as part of its annual free swim lesson event — giving local children a chance to develop water safety skills before summer gets underway.
The lessons, sponsored by Idaho Falls Parks & Recreation, are available to children ages 3 through 13 across all ability levels. Each session runs 25 minutes and is led by American Red Cross-certified instructors covering both foundational and more advanced swimming techniques. Participants will receive a placement card indicating their current skill level, which families can use to guide future enrollment decisions.
What Families Need to Know
Registration is required and space is limited, with organizers encouraging early sign-up as slots are filling fast. Families can register online through the City of Idaho Falls website, by phone at (208) 612-8519, or in person at the aquatic center, located at 149 7th Street in Idaho Falls.
A few requirements apply. Children must be at least 3 years old for the Preschool Level time slot and at least 6 years old for the Learn to Swim Level. Each child is limited to one free lesson, and a parent or guardian must remain on-site inside the building for the duration. Three-year-old participants are required to wear a swim diaper regardless of potty-training status.
As an added benefit, children who participate will receive early registration access to summer swim lessons and the Surfer Swim Team program — ahead of general public enrollment.
Building Water Safety in the Region
Water safety remains a priority for communities across Southeast Idaho, where rivers, reservoirs, and recreational water features are a fixture of warm-weather life. Events like the free lesson day provide a low-barrier entry point for families who may not otherwise enroll their children in formal swimming instruction.
With summer activities ramping up across Bannock County and the surrounding region — including a busy stretch of local athletic competition, including the Big Sky Softball Tournament currently underway in Pocatello — community recreation programs are in full swing heading into the warmer months. Area youth sports are also heating up, with several local high school baseball programs learning their regional state tournament matchups this week.
What Comes Next
Saturday’s event is expected to draw strong turnout, and organizers note that available time slots are going quickly. Families interested in securing a spot are urged to register as soon as possible through one of the three available sign-up options. Following the free lesson event, the aquatic center will open summer swim lesson registration to the general public — with participating families gaining a head start on enrollment.
