Idaho Prep Softball Teams Battle for State Tournament Berths in District Play
District Tournaments Underway Across Eastern Idaho
State tournament berths are on the line this week as district softball tournaments get underway across Eastern Idaho, with programs ranging from Class 3A to 6A competing for spots in Idaho’s premier high school competition. Several Bannock County-area teams are among the contenders, and the action runs through the weekend.
The stakes are high for programs that spent months building toward this moment. Two East Idaho teams earned state trophies last season — Malad finished second and North Fremont placed third in the 3A state tournament — and both programs are positioned to make another deep run in 2026. According to the latest coaches’ state poll, Pocatello is tied for No. 5 in 5A, while Preston holds the No. 4 spot in 4A. Malad and North Fremont are ranked No. 2 and No. 5 in 3A, respectively.
Pocatello, Preston Among Teams With State Eyes
In 5A District 5, Pocatello and Century will meet in a best-of-three series beginning Wednesday at Pocatello. The district champion earns the lone state berth from that district, making every game critical. Pocatello’s No. 5 state ranking adds weight to a series that could determine whether the Pocatello program advances to the postseason stage.

In 4A District 5, Preston enters as the top seed and host after defeating Bear Lake in last week’s regular-season finale. The Indians are ranked fourth in the state and open Tuesday against No. 5 seed Marsh Valley, which already earned its spot in the bracket by defeating Snake River in a play-in game. No. 2 Bear Lake, which knocked off No. 3 American Falls on Saturday, awaits the winner of Tuesday’s contest. The championship game in that district is scheduled for Saturday, with both finalists advancing to the state tournament.
In 6A District 4-5-6, two state berths are available. Highland will host and enters as the top seed, followed by Rigby, Thunder Ridge, and Madison. Offense has been a theme for each of these programs — Highland is averaging 11.58 runs per game, Rigby leads the field at 12.23 runs per game, and Thunder Ridge is putting up 11.08 runs per contest. Tournament play opens Tuesday with the championship game set for Thursday.
In 5A District 6, Bonneville and Hillcrest enter as the top two seeds after splitting games during the regular season. Four of the six conference teams carry overall winning records, setting up what should be a competitive field. Bonneville hosts, with the top two finishers earning state berths. Play begins Tuesday, with the championship game Thursday.
3A Contenders and Deeper Bracket Action
In 3A District 4-5, Malad is the top seed and host, opening against West Side on Monday. No. 2 Wendell and No. 3 Declo also play Monday. The champion earns the automatic state berth, while the runner-up advances to Saturday’s state play-in game. The championship is set for Thursday.
In 3A District 6, North Fremont and Firth both advanced to Tuesday’s semifinal after Saturday wins over West Jefferson and Ririe, respectively. The tournament is being held at Firth High School. The district earns 2.5 berths to the 3A state tournament, meaning the district champion and runner-up each advance automatically, while the third-place finisher moves on to a state play-in game.
In 4A District 6, Sugar-Salem knocked off Teton in a best-of-three series and will travel to top-seed South Fremont for a best-of-three championship series beginning Wednesday. The series winner earns the automatic state berth, and the runner-up will compete in a state play-in game Saturday.
